TBT 2012: Benny and Kaz, a Silly and Pointless Tale of Murder and Love

They’re brutal. They’re violent. And they’re totally gay for each other. Pfft! 😀

One of the fun things about going through my old stuff to find something to post for TBT is coming across projects that have completely slipped my mind. (Conversely, one of the not-at-all fun things is remembering that I can’t draw for shit so most of these projects will probably never see life outside of a Word document unless stick figure art ever takes off.) I can’t believe I forgot about Benny and Kaz. Shame on me.

It all started when I was chatting with the old partner about a comic strip that I enjoyed. I began wondering if I could pull off writing one. At first, I wasn’t sure because it was one thing to have an entire chapter to work with, but a totally different thing to get to the point in only six or seven panels. But I decided to give it a shot and that’s how Benny and Kaz was born.

Basically, it’s about a couple of assassins who have lots of sex with each other when they’re not killing people. Hardly award-caliber stuff, but I had a blast with it.

Here’s some character info and the scripts for the first two strips:

Kazuki aka “Kaz”
The leader of the merry band of killers (there are five of them). He’s a pretty laid back guy, which he has to be to deal with…

Benjamin aka “Benny”
Kaz’s boyfriend. He’s high maintenance and high-strung.

Nine
Kaz’s ex-turned-best-friend. Calm, cool, and collected. He’s also a chain smoker because someone is always a chain smoker in my stories.

Becky
Benny’s BFF.

There are others but they’re not in the strips I’m sharing. Also, for what it’s worth, Kaz is Kira‘s little brother.

Benny and Kaz
Comic Strip #1
“Big Bad Benny”

Remember to keep it simple.  No elaborate backgrounds are necessary.  This should be easy and fun!

Panel 1.

Kaz and Nine are in the foreground.  Nine is smoking.  In the background, off to the side, we see the outlines of two males brawling.  Brawling dudes should not be distinguishable.

NINE:  DID YOU CATCH THE FOOTBALL GAME LAST SUNDAY?

KAZ:  I DID. WHAT THE FUCK, MAN?

NINE:  I KNOW, RIGHT?  I LOST TWO HUNDRED TO NICK ON THAT SHIT.

KAZ: THAT SUCKS.

NINE:  TELL ME ABOUT IT.

Panel 2.

Same, except now they are both watching the fight, where one of the men has another in a headlock.  Need some sort of visual cue or SFX indicating the snapping of the other guy’s neck.

KAZ:  IT’S ABOUT DAMN TIME.

NINE: WHY DIDN’T HE JUST SHOOT THE GUY?  WHAT, HE’S A HAND-TO-HAND EXPERT ALL OF A SUDDEN?

KAZ:  OH, THAT.  I LET HIM BEAT ME WHILE WE WERE SPARRING THIS WEEKEND AND HE’S BEEN ACTING HYPERMASCULINE EVER SINCE.  I SHIT YOU NOT, THIS MORNING HE PICKED A FIGHT WITH THE TOASTER.

NINE:  DID HE WIN?

KAZ:  I RULED IT A DRAW.

Panel 3.

Benny is standing proud and victorious- and somewhat bruised- over the bloody and battered body of his opponent.  Nothing too graphic.  Nine and Kaz’s SD heads are on opposite ends of the panel, toward the bottom.  Their expressions are mildly horrified.

BENNY:  HASTA LA VISTA, BABY!

NINE: (SMALL FONT) DID HE REALLY JUST SAY THAT?

KAZ: (SMALL FONT) HEY, AT LEAST HE’S GETTING BETTER.  I TOLD HIM IF I EVER HEARD HIM SAY “HAKUNA MATATA, BITCH” AGAIN THAT I WAS GOING TO BREAK UP WITH HIM.

Panel 4.

Benny has joined Kaz and Nine.  He’s hanging on Kaz with a suggestive expression while they stare at him, unimpressed.

BENNY:  HEY BABE. DID YOU SEE ME KICK ASS?

KAZ:  I DID INDEED.

BENNY:  GOD, THAT TURNED ME ON SOMETHING FIERCE.  I AM SO TOPPING YOU TONIGHT.

NINE:  (SMALL FONT) BEEN THERE, DONE THAT.

KAZ:  YOU’RE NOT HELPING, NINE.

Panel 5.

Kaz and Nine are talking.

CAPTION:  THE NEXT DAY.

NINE:  SO HOW DID IT GO LAST NIGHT?  DID BENNY FINALLY GET TO HAVE HIS WAY WITH YOU?

KAZ:  YOU KNOW I DON’T KISS AND TELL…

Panel 6.

Kaz and Nine are watching Benny, who is in the background.  Kaz’s expression is a bit smug, unlike poor Benny, whose face twisted in agony.  He is bent over slightly and holding his backside.  Add in something to indicate his ass is killing him.

KAZ:  … WHEN THE ANSWER IS OBVIOUS.

BENNY: (SMALL FONT, BACKGROUND) CAN’T… SIT… EVER… AGAIN…

NINE:  WELL DONE.

KAZ:  HE MOST CERTAINLY WAS.

Benny and Kaz
Comic Strip #2
“Numbers Don’t Lie”

Remember to keep it simple.  No elaborate backgrounds are necessary.  This should be easy and fun!

Panel 1.

Benny and Becky are with Nine.  They look very excited.  Nine does not.  And of course, he’s still smoking.

BENNY:  HEY NINE!  I WANT YOU TO MEET MY BEST FRIEND IN THE WHOLE WORLD, BECKY.

BECKY:  HI!

NINE:  HEY.

BECKY:  WHY DO THEY CALL YOU NINE, NINE?

NINE:  TAKE A WILD GUESS.

Panel 2.

Becky and Benny look both confused and a little frightened.  Nine keeps puffing away.

Panel 3.

Becky and Benny stare at Nine’s crotch.  Perhaps a little arrow for emphasis?  If you don’t have a full body shot in the panel, that’s fine.  It should still be obvious what they’re looking at.

Panel 4.

Becky is looking at Nine while Benny continues ogling his crotch.

BECKY:  SO, UH, WHAT’S YOUR LAST NAME?

NINE:  THREE-FOURTHS.

Panel 5.

Same as before, except B&B’s eyes look like they’re about to pop out of their heads while Nine is looking rather smug.  (Who wouldn’t, carrying that around in their pants?)

Panel 6.

Kaz is sitting on a couch and cleaning one of his guns while Benny is curled up beside him, leaning his head on Kaz’s shoulder with a very worried and pouty expression.

CAPTION:  LATER.

KAZ:  DON’T BE SILLY, BENNY.  OF COURSE THAT’S NOT HIS LAST NAME.

BENNY:  I FIGURED AS MUCH.

KAZ:  HE WASN’T LYING ABOUT THE SIZE, THOUGH.

BENNY:  (SMALL FONT) I FIGURED AS MUCH.

Panel 7.

Benny has his arms wrapped around Kaz’s neck and is looking ridiculously lovey dovey.  Kaz returns the hug with one arm while calmly holding the gun up and out of the way so that he does not accidentally shoot his clingy boyfriend.

KAZ:  DON’T WORRY.  YOURS IS STILL MY FAVORITE…

BENNY:  AW, I LOVE YOU, KAZ.

KAZ:  (VERY SMALL FONT)… EVEN THOUGH IT’S NOT NEARLY AS BIG.

BENNY:  WAIT, WHAT?

KAZ:  I SAID I LOVE YOU, TOO.

Although I was skeptical at first, I found B&K surprisingly easy to write once I got the ball rolling and had almost twenty strips done before I knew it. I just might try to get this drawn one day. Or do it myself. Very badly, lol.

  1. Wish you could have heard my bark of loud laughter when I read “three fourths” and the subsequent lying to my mother about what was so funny.
